Canada warns that "conspiracy theorists" could burn 5G towers
A "conspiracy theory" linking 5G to the coronavirus has spread like wildfire this year. In April, numerous 5G towers were set on fire by people in the UK who believed radiation from the towers was contributing to the spread of COVID-19.
Now, in a new confidential report received by Global News, Canadian intelligence has warned that violent extremists could be ready to attack 5G radio masts.
"As companies get serious about building 5G infrastructure, extremists from across the extremist landscape could commit arson and vandalism against that infrastructure," the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) wrote in the report.
"Given the extraordinary impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the lives of individuals around the world, the CSIS is aware that certain actors in various threat landscapes could try to protect their own interests," said the CSIS- Speaker John Townsend.
According to CSIS, the physical resistance to 5G wireless communication towers is significantly lower compared to other countries in Europe.
However, it was said that "Canada-based online communities" were promoting 5G conspiracies and right-wing groups were trying to "capitalize on the" 5G hysteria ".
The CSIS found there had been a handful of incidents in the country where cell towers were damaged. The most significant attack took place in April in Laval, Quebec, where a mast was set on fire and $ 1 million in damage. At least six towers were set on fire in Montreal in early May.
